What Is Barre? Benefits, Results, and What to Expect at Your First Class
What Is Barre?
Barre has become one of the fastest-growing fitness classes because it combines the best parts of strength training, Pilates, stretching and functional movement into one low-impact, high intensity full-body workout.
Despite its ballet-inspired roots, you do not need dance experience to enjoy barre. In fact, most people who walk through our doors at Motion Study have never stepped into a dance studio. Barre is designed for every fitness level, using small, controlled movements, light weights, and bodyweight exercises to improve strength, balance, posture, and endurance.
Whether you're looking to build strength, cross-train for another sport, or simply find a workout you actually enjoy, barre is a welcoming place to start.
Here’s the Quick Rundown:
Barre is a low-impact, full-body strength workout inspired by ballet, Pilates, and functional fitness.
Our barre classes incorporate a ballet barre (hence the name!) for certain exercises and stretches, though no dance experience is required.
Barre improves strength, balance, posture, flexibility, and muscular endurance.
Classes are designed for all fitness levels with modifications available.
Most beginners see improvements in strength and posture after just a few weeks of consistent attendance.
Motion Study offers welcoming barre classes in Newton, MA, designed to help you move well and feel strong.

What Is a Barre Workout?
A barre workout combines elements of ballet-inspired movement, Pilates, strength training, stretching and functional fitness. Rather than focusing on heavy weights or high-impact exercises, barre emphasizes controlled movement, proper form, and time under tension.
During class, you'll move through a series of exercises that target every major muscle group, often using:
Bodyweight
Light dumbbells
Resistance bands
Yoga blocks
Small exercise balls
The barre (of course!) for balance, support
Many of the movements are intentionally small. While they may look easy, those tiny pulses, holds, and controlled repetitions create significant muscular fatigue, helping build endurance and stability in ways that traditional workouts often overlook.
At Motion Study, our classes are thoughtfully programmed to challenge your entire body while remaining approachable for beginners and engaging for experienced members.
What Happens During a Barre Class?
Every studio has its own style, but most barre classes follow a similar full-body format.
Warm-Up and Upper Body Strength
Classes begin with dynamic movements to increase your heart rate, activate your muscles, and prepare your body for the workout ahead. You’ll work your core through a plank series before moving on to your shoulders, chest, back, and arms using light weights or bodyweight exercises. Rather than lifting heavy, you'll focus on high repetitions and controlled movement that challenge muscular endurance.
Thigh Work
One of the signature portions of a barre class is the thigh series. We use both small, controlled movements, as well as full range movements to challenge your quads, hamstrings, inner thighs, and outer thighs through a combination of pulses, holds, full-range movements nd high-repetition exercises. Both small and full-range movements are designed to keep your muscles under tension, helping build strength, stability, and muscular endurance. Don't be surprised if your legs start to shake, that's completely normal and a sign your muscles are working hard!
Seat Work
Next comes one of our students' favorite (and most challenging) sections: seat work.
This series focuses on strengthening your gluteals and the muscles surrounding your hips through targeted standing and floor-based exercises. Strong gluteals do more than just support everyday movement: they also play an important role in posture, balance, and injury prevention.
You'll likely use a combination of bodyweight movements, the barre for support, and occasionally props to activate muscles that are often underutilized in everyday life.
Core Training
The core is the foundation of every strengthening exercise in our classes, but we always include a complete abdominal section to focus on the entire abdominal complex.
Stretch & Recovery
Classes incorporate and finish with stretching to improve flexibility, support recovery, and help you leave feeling energized rather than depleted.
The Benefits of Barre
One of the reasons barre continues to grow in popularity is that it offers benefits far beyond the studio.
1. Build Full-Body Strength
Barre is a strength training technique that focuses on muscular endurance, control, and stability. You'll strengthen both large muscle groups and the smaller stabilizing muscles that support healthy movement in everyday life.
This balanced approach helps improve everything from carrying groceries to climbing stairs, running, or lifting weights more efficiently.
2. Improve Your Posture
Many of us spend hours sitting at desks or looking down at our phones. Barre helps counteract those habits by strengthening the muscles that support good posture.
As your upper back, shoulders, core, and glutes become stronger, standing tall begins to feel more natural.
3. Increase Balance and Stability
Balance isn't just important as we age; it's essential for athletic performance and injury prevention.
Because barre challenges you to stabilize your body throughout class, many members notice improvements in coordination, body awareness, and overall confidence in movement.
4. Low Impact Doesn't Mean Easy
One of the biggest misconceptions about barre is that because it's low impact, it must also be low intensity. In reality, barre can be incredibly challenging.
By minimizing jumping and reducing stress on the joints, barre allows you to work hard without the pounding associated with some forms of cardio. It's an excellent option for people looking to build strength while being mindful of their knees, hips, or back.
5. Develop Better Muscular Endurance
Holding a position for 30 seconds can feel surprisingly difficult. Barre improves muscular endurance by encouraging your muscles to stay engaged for longer periods of time. This translates into improved performance in everyday activities and other forms of exercise.
6. Support Other Fitness Goals
Barre complements nearly every other workout, including:
Running
Cycling
Tennis
Golf
Hiking
Weightlifting
Pilates
Yoga
Barre helps build the stability, mobility, and strength needed to perform those activities more effectively.
Many runners, in particular, find that adding one or two barre classes each week helps strengthen their hips and core, improving efficiency while reducing the risk of common overuse injuries.
Is Barre Good for Beginners?
Absolutely.
Barre is one of the most beginner-friendly fitness classes because every exercise can be modified to match your experience level. At Motion Study, our instructors offer options throughout class so you can work at your own pace while continuing to challenge yourself.
Many first-time clients worry they'll be "behind" everyone else. The truth is that every person in the room is working toward their own goals, and our instructors are there to guide you, not judge you. Our community is built on encouragement.
Do You Need Dance Experience?
Not at all. Although barre takes inspiration from ballet, it is a fitness class, not a dance class. There are no choreographed routines to memorize, and no previous dance training is required. If you can move, you can take barre.
What Should You Wear to Barre?
For your first class, we recommend:
Comfortable athletic clothing you can move in
Grip socks (required for safety and stability)
A water bottle
A positive attitude
All equipment is provided during class, so there's no need to bring weights or other fitness gear.
How Often Should You Take Barre?
If you're just getting started, attending 2–3 classes per week is a great place to begin. This schedule allows your body time to recover while building consistency and confidence.
As you become more comfortable, many members enjoy combining barre with other classes like strength training, cardio, or Pilates to create a balanced weekly routine. At Motion Study, our variety of class formats makes it easy to find a schedule that works for your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is barre a good workout for weight loss?
Barre can support weight loss when combined with a balanced nutrition plan and consistent exercise routine. The strengthening exercises help increase muscle density, which can raise your resting metabolic rate to help you burn more calories at rest. More importantly, it helps build lean muscle, improve strength, and increase overall activity levels.
Will barre make me bulky?
No. Barre focuses on muscular endurance and functional strength using lighter resistance and higher repetitions, making it an excellent complement to other forms of strength training.
Can beginners take barre classes?
Yes. Barre is designed for all experience levels, and instructors provide modifications throughout class.
Is barre cardio or strength training?
Barre is primarily a strength-based workout, although many classes also elevate your heart rate and provide cardiovascular benefits.
How long does it take to see results from barre?
Everyone's body is different, but many people notice improvements in strength, posture, and energy within a few weeks of attending classes consistently.
